The National Ignition Facility in Livermore, CA is close to finishing the world's largest laser. This post could end right there because of the colossal coolness that encompasses with that statement, but... its not, it gets better! One of the uses for this laser could be the fusion of hydrogen isotopes, resulting in plasma, of which the heat could be used to create virtually endless energy. Did you hear that? Endless, energy. =D

Researchers are optimistic that the completed laser in 2009 will lead to some critical discoveries in 2010 resulting in an increase in the world's energy. This could mean rising gas prices are insignificant sooner than big oil would have liked. So what? They've got enough moolah' now from their, 'price gouging', to go out and monopolize something else. Say perhaps tourism, because some of the best beaches in the world are located in/around the middle east. Maybe they can start digging into the rich man's pockets now, and leave everyone else alone. The sooner this laser gets finished, the better.
